Iditarod Runner Pete Ripmaster to Speak at Second Gear ASHEVILLE, NC – Second Gear in West Asheville hosts ultra runner Pete Ripmaster for an inspirational speaking event from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 28. Ripmaster will discuss his upcoming effort to run the 1,000 mile Iditarod Trail Invitational in Alaska. A native of the Detroit area, Ripmaster ran 50 marathons in every state between 2008 and 2012 raising over $50,000 to support cancer research. A former teacher and running shop owner, Ripmaster is now a competitive ultra runner living in Fairview, NC. On February 28 he’ll begin a 1,000 mile run through the heart of Alaska in the dead of winter hauling a sled with all his gear. This will be Ripmaster’s third Iditarod start, but rather than running the 350 mile version of the race as he has the past two years, Ripmaster will be among a handful of runners that will attempt the entire historic dog sled route from Knik to Nome. Last year, no runners finished the unmarked race that crosses a portion of Alaska’s vast interior. Since 2000, just 15 runners have crossed the 1,000-mile finish line. The last winner, in 2014, took 23 days. In 2015, Ripmaster finished third in the 350 mile race. The event, he said, included moments of euphoria, but more often than not it’s filled with despair. Ripmaster, who has struggled with depression his entire life, says those highs and lows on the trail are precisely why he runs. “The thing that does best for me is to run,” said Ripmaster who was recently profiled in Blue Ridge Outdoors magazine. “I typically hold all of my emotions in - the only way I can feel free is to let it out. That’s why I run. It’s mental health. I embrace the pain.” Not only will he attempt among the most gruelling foot races in America, he’ll also aim to raise $44,000 for Hope Chest for Women, Inc. in memory of his late mother Hillary. Hope Chest for Women is a non-profit organization that offers support, education, and financial assistance in 22 counties in Western North Carolina to women at risk or diagnosed with breast or gynecological cancer. The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. with complimentary beverages and snacks. Ripmaster will speak from 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. For more information about the event contact Jack Igelman at 828-216-0888 or jack@igelman.com. Hulabalooers (New Word)- The 1st Annual Steep Canyon 50K is less than 3 weeks away! We wanted to take this time to go over the flow of how race day is going to go. We figure the more information you have now, the less confusion we have race day! Packet Pickup will be the morning of the race: Thursday September 10th from 9:00 – 11:00 AM. If you all are just coming to run and not camp, go directly to race day parking. We will have a team leading you that way when you get to Reeb Ranch (315 Shoals Falls Road, Hendersonville, NC 28739). However, if you’re camping PLEASE go slightly up DuPont Road (again, we will have volunteers and police telling you where to go) and pull into the set up camp spot. You will park your car, take your tent and backpacks and take a spot in the general camping area. You will just claim a spot, throw down your tent and packs then you will go back to your car and go park in the general parking area. There is only a few hundred yards between tent set up and race day parking so a return trip won’t kill ya. Consider it a warm up for the run! Keep in mind that runners will be running through tent village. We will have their route mowed down shorter than the camping area so it will be VERY easy to tell where NOT TO CAMP. PLEASE DON'T CAMP WITHIN 5 FEET OF THE RUNNERS ROUTE unless you want to be trampled by turtles. We will be giving wristbands to all the folks who have already paid for camping. Please make sure that if YOU didn’t prepay for camping, you pay $15 to the folks who are collecting. Don’t be that guy/girl who doesn’t pay, this is for a great cause folks and every dime helps us! I’m sure you understand. You will then pick up your race bibs! 50K runners and the FIRST relay member will start running at 12:00 NOON. The second relay runners will be running at 1:00 PM and the 3rd relay member will start running at 2:00 PM. Again, we do this so that everybody will have plenty of time to finish and all relay members will be back in time to see all the bad ass music we have and enjoy the night. All runners will have a music wristband in your packet pick up bag. Don’t feel the need to wear that while running but please put it on when you’re ready to par-tay! The live music will start at 3:30 PM and go past 11:00 PM. Oskar Blues will be set up on site slanging beers and we will have a couple food trucks available so runners can pay for grub! We certainly want this to be a family friendly event so please be respectful of the land and others. I don’t believe we need to go into this further. We have worked our tails off to bring you a very unique race experience. Understand that it’s a first year event. Things won’t go perfectly but I hope y’all show us grace and understand that were doing the very best we can. If you see something that could be better, certainly let us know but do your best to understand we made this event to let people explore a beautiful area and to have fun! We are sure you will see that this race has the potential to be one of the best in the Southeast VERY quickly. We are beyond THRILLED that you are man/woman enough to take on The Steep Canyon 50K and Relay Hulabaloo. You will not be disappointed. See you in a few short weeks. Until then Yee Haw and get out to Brevard, NC safely on Thursday, September 10th. - RD’s Charles and Pete, Oskar Blues, Reeb Ranch and Can’d Aid (and a BUNCH of RAD sponsors) We are less than 2 week out! If you have any questions comment here and we'll try and answer them for you! See you all soon!
